Workshop with David Haynes

Have you ever worried about the risks of the web? This workshop is an opportunity to help develop ideas about risk which will be represented in an ontology of risk. The workshop includes a briefing on ontologies and the way in which they work. You will be contributing to a topical piece of research.

This workshop is the first Knowledge Organisation Meetup of 2019. It will take place at the Canada Water Culture Space, just next to the Canada Water tube station on the Jubilee line.

Entrance is free of charge but places are limited and to avoid disappointment we recommend that you register as soon as possible.

Post event Report

The first Knowledge Organization London Meetup for 2019, organized by ISKO UK looked at ontologies as a way of organizing concepts. Using the Synaptica Graphite system, the presenter demonstrated how ontologies allow the possibility of going beyond the hierarchical relationships found in a classical taxonomy. The use of appropriate tools allows for scaling up of this approach to larger data sets and automatic generation of visualisations. Eventually the ontology will be tested on relevant linked open data sets.

The workshop was an interactive session where participants were asked to think about the risks that they face when online. This quickly extended into a discussion about the Internet of Things and the risks associated with personal information on those systems.

There was a lively discussion about how to categorise the risks identified and this developed into two alternative organizing principles. One was to look at the risks themselves and to categorise them by type of threat that they post. The other was to take a human-centred approach and to look at the impact that risks have on different aspects an individual’s existence. This is a logical approach, given the emphasis of this ontology on personal risk and the overall objective of gaining a better understanding of risk in order to improve online safety.

Slides are attached and include the risk categories identified during the workshop.
